Türk made his assessments during the interactive dialogue session held under the title “The human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories” within the scope of the fifty-fifth session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

“The prospect of an Israeli ground attack on Rafah will raise the horror experienced by people in Gaza to a new and worse level.”

Turk said that Rafah, where more than 1.5 million people live despite the constant bombing, has become the center for humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Türk warned that the ground attack on Rafah would lead to massive loss of life, new brutal crimes, new displacement, and the complete loss of hopes for effective humanitarian aid.

“I cannot see how such an operation could be consistent with the binding orders ordered by the International Court of Justice,” Türk called on all influential countries to do their best to prevent such an outcome.
