Turkey calls on Greece to end its practices in “Western Thrace”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu called on Greece to put an end to its interventionist practices and policies of oppression towards the Turkish-elected muftis in the western Thrace region in northeastern Greece.

This came in his comment on Twitter on the tweet of the head of the Advisory Council for the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace, the elected Grand Mufti of Gomolzhina, Ibrahim Sharif.

Sharif was speaking in his tweet about his summons to appear before the Selanik (East) Court on October 7, on charges of abuse of office.

Because of his participation in a mass circumcision ceremony 5 years ago in Alan Koyo.

Çavuşoğlu called on Greece to put an end to its interventionist practices and policies of oppression against the muftis elected by the Turks in Western Thrace.

Çavuşoğlu added: “We stand by our people in protecting their religious rights and freedoms stemming from the Lausanne Peace Treaty.”

Western Thrace, located in northeastern Greece near the border with Turkey, is home to an ancient Turkish minority, with a population of about 150,000.
