Çavuşoğlu: Confidence-building steps will be discussed with Armenia

Regarding the steps of normalization with Armenia, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said:

“In the first meeting, the objectives of starting the process and what is expected were discussed, and in the second meeting, confidence-building steps will be discussed, and the goal is full normalization.”

After Monday’s cabinet meeting, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu answered journalists’ questions about the agenda.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stated that they hope the tension in the region will decrease and indicated dialogue for a solution.

Announcing that they will continue their contacts to end the tension between Ukraine and Russia, Cavusoglu said:

“Dialogue between the United States and Russia will be decisive. NATO first gave Russia an oral answer, and now it will respond in writing. He will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Geneva.

The tension continues, we will continue our contacts in the same way and we hope that the tension will decrease in this way.”

Çavuşoğlu also made the following statement regarding the steps to normalize relations with Armenia:

“In the first meeting, the goals of starting the process and what is expected were discussed, the goal being full normalization.

The Armenians are also very happy with it, but in the process leading to full normalization, what steps can be taken.

This is with the exception of the appointment of special representatives that the special representatives will work on and confidence-building steps at the next meeting.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs used the following data in its statement regarding the meeting of Special Representatives of Turkey-Armenia:

Special Representatives for the normalization process between Turkey and Armenia, Ambassador Serdar Kilic and Deputy Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Rubin Rubinyan met in Moscow on January 14, 2022.

During their first meeting, which was held in a positive and constructive atmosphere, the two Special Representatives exchanged initial views on the process of normalization to take place through the dialogue between Turkey and Armenia.

The two sides agreed to continue negotiations with a view to full normalization without preconditions.

The place and date of the second meeting between the Special Representatives will be determined at a later time through diplomatic channels.
