The European Union welcomed the extension of the Grain Corridor Agreement through the Black Sea in line with the decision taken between Turkey, the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine.

This came in a statement issued by the Office of the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on Thursday.
The statement noted that the agreement is of vital importance in lowering food prices and ensuring food security around the world.
He stressed that the European Union appreciates the efforts of the United Nations and Turkey to ensure the continuation of the initiative to ship grain across the Black Sea.
He pointed out that 25 million tons of grain and other agricultural products were exported through the Black Sea and land routes that the European Union calls “corridors of solidarity.”

The statement stressed that “food should not be used as a weapon of war.”
He added that Russia deliberately targeted agricultural facilities and export routes in Ukraine, which led to an increase in food prices.
And he considered that the EU sanctions against Russia did not target the trade of agricultural products, food and fertilizers with other countries.
Earlier Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the extension of the grain corridor agreement through the Black Sea for 120 days, starting from November 19.

On July 22, Turkey, the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine signed an agreement in Istanbul to resume grain exports from three Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea, which were suspended in February of this year due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
