Security Council: a cooperation with Turkey to transfer Ukraine’s grain to the world

The President of the United Nations Security Council, the Brazilian ambassador to the United Nations, Ronaldo Costa Filho, said Friday.

The international efforts are continuing, in cooperation with Turkey, to transfer Ukrainian grain to the world market.

This came in a press conference held by the Brazilian ambassador, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

On the occasion of his country’s assumption of the monthly presidency of the work of the Security Council, starting in early July.

“We will seek for council members to focus their discussions on the Ukrainian crisis in the Security Council on one aspect of the crisis, and I mean here the global food security file,” the council president said.

And he added: “This file is now affecting Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and even the whole world…

That is why we want the discussion within the Security Council to lead to a result-oriented approach, we want solutions to the crisis and we don’t want to just blame anyone.”

He continued, “We want to see concrete steps that can be taken to alleviate the food crisis, and there are vigorous negotiations that are currently taking place in cooperation with Turkey and the United Nations.

The Secretary General (Antonio Guterres) is personally involved in these negotiations for the transfer of Ukrainian grain to the world market.”

He added, “I know that there is a division among the members of the Council over the Ukrainian file… and we believe that the only way to a solution is diplomacy, and all parties sit at the negotiating table.”

With regard to extending the mandate of the UN aid mechanism to Syria, through the “Bab al-Hawa” crossing on the Syrian border with Turkey.

“Norway and Ireland are the two countries involved in this in the Security Council, and I am aware of the extensive negotiations that have taken place with the rest of the Council in this regard,” the Security Council president said.

And he added: “All members of the Council wish to reach points that are acceptable to all regarding the UN aid mechanism.”

“I can say that based on the negotiations that Norway and Ireland have had.

The two countries distributed a draft resolution to the rest of the council members, and I was informed that there is optimism and hope that human suffering will not increase.”

The current exceptional mandate of the Security Council to deliver aid to northwest Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Turkish border expires on July 10.

This is pursuant to Council Resolution No. 2585 issued in the same month of 2021.

The majority of the council’s member states (15 countries), with the exception of Russia and China, stress the importance of continuing cross-border humanitarian aid from Turkey to Syria.

In order to preserve the lives and well-being of more than 4.1 million people trapped in northwestern Syria.
