The International Atomic Energy Agency announced on Wednesday that it had lost contact with the monitoring systems at the Chernobyl nuclear plant near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and under the jurisdiction of Russia.

The agency said in a statement that the Chernobyl plant “has stopped sending any information,” expressing concern about the safety of the station’s employees working under the control of Russian forces.
On Tuesday, IAEA Director Rafael Grossi noted that remote transmission of data from safeguards monitoring systems installed at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was “interrupted”.
Safeguards is a term used by the International Atomic Energy Agency to describe the technical procedures it applies to nuclear materials and activities.
