The Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization has also been postponed due to the South African alternative to the Coronavirus.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala reminded that many countries have imposed travel restrictions as a result of the emergence of the South African alternative.

“It was not possible for many ministers and high-level delegates to have face-to-face meetings at the conference, a situation that would have prevented equal participation.”

Okonjo-Iweala stressed that the decision to postpone the conference was not easy and said, “As the Director-General, my priority is to ensure the health and safety of those attending the conference, and caution should be exercised.”

Okonjo-Iweala assured that negotiations and cooperation between WTO member states will continue despite the conference being canceled.

“The new format reminds us once again that we need to fulfill our duties during the pandemic.”

The Twelfth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, which was scheduled to start on November 30 in Geneva, was to run until December 3.
