Algeria… Ending the duties of the National Gendarmerie Commander

On Tuesday, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune terminated the duties of the National Gendarmerie Commander, Major General Noureddine Qawasmeh, and appointed Brigadier General Yahya Ali Welhaj as his successor.

On Tuesday, Lieutenant-General Said Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the National Army, supervised the inauguration ceremony of Brigadier General Yahya Ali Welhaj as commander of the National Gendarmerie, succeeding Major General Noureddine Qawasmeh.

Brigadier General Welhaj has held the position of Chief of Staff of the National Gendarmerie Command since August 2020.

In addition, he served as commander of the National Gendarmerie in the third military district of Bechar, on the border with Morocco.

On August 4, 2020, the Algerian President appointed Qawasmeh, whose duties had been terminated, as the new commander of the National Gendarmerie Forces.

The National Gendarmerie in Algeria is a force under the Ministry of Defense, but it undertakes some police functions outside the cities.

It also has a department specialized in security investigations into corruption and various crimes, working under the supervision of the judiciary.

After handing over the tasks between the former official of the Gendarmerie and its new commander, Chengriha said, “The conspiracies and intrigues being hatched against Algeria and the machinations plotted against its people are not a figment of the imagination.”

On Saturday, the Algerian Ministry of Information announced the withdrawal of the accreditation of Al Arabiya TV, after it was accused of “misleading and manipulation.”

Since Tebboune came to power in December 2019, he has made several changes at the level of the military leadership.

It included the ground forces, the administration of the Internal Security Department at the Intelligence, and the Director of Military Justice.
