The mayor of Bolu from the opposition Republican People’s Party, Tanju Özcan, sparked a major controversy again due to racist statements targeting foreigners residing in Bolu.

Özcan announced that he had submitted a proposal to the municipal council to impose exorbitant financial fees as fees on foreign nationals residing in Bolu.

Özcan appeared in a video clip during press statements about the municipality’s budget revenues for 2022, revealing the materials of his new proposal.

Özcan said, “We are in the process of implementing a different decision on marriage fees. If it is the first marriage for both parties, the fees will be low.

While if one of the two parties marries for the second time, the fees will be 5,000 pounds, but if one of the parties marries for the third time, the fees will be 50,000 pounds.

He added, “If one or both of the spouses are foreigners, the marriage fee will be 100,000 Turkish liras.”

Özcan continued, targeting foreigners with racist statements, saying, “Of course we want to implement this law to prevent foreigners from marrying in the city of Bolu.”

To prevent their settlement in Bolu, to prevent children from having children in Bolu, and to hamper the marriage of Syrians and Iraqis in Bolu.

It is noteworthy that Özcan’s racist statements were widely criticized by public opinion in Turkey, and it is not the first time of its kind.

Özcan was famous for many of his racist stances and statements against refugees and foreigners in general, such as his proposal to raise water consumption fees for foreigners in Bolu by 10 times.
