On Thursday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar paid a visit to the cemetery of Turkish martyrs in the city of Ssis, on the sidelines of an official visit to Latvia.

Akar continued his talks in the capital, Riga, and moved with his Latvian counterpart, Artis Pabriks, to the city of Ssis, to visit the cemetery of the Turkish martyrs.
Upon his arrival at the cemetery, Minister Akar received information from the Turkish Ambassador to Riga, Gulson Arkul, and laid a wreath on the memorial with Pabrix.
Akar expressed his thanks to the Ssis municipality officials for their contributions in caring for the cemetery of the Turkish martyrs.

This is the first visit to the cemetery of the Turkish martyrs in Ssis at the level of a Turkish defense minister in 17 years.
The cemetery was built on an area of 3800 square meters in memory of 26 Turkish soldiers who were wounded during the Ottoman-Russian war in 1877-1878 and were martyred in Ssis after being captured by the Russians.

After his visit to the cemetery, Akar moved to Lillevard Air Force Base, southeast of the Latvian capital.
