Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, said that the Israeli attacks on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) constitute a serious threat to global peace and security.
This came in a speech he delivered on Wednesday evening before a session of the UN Security Council that discussed the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip at the request of Algeria and Slovenia.
Ambassador Yıldız pointed out that UNRWA has been subjected to a malicious, politically motivated smear campaign.
He condemned the Israeli attacks on UNRWA and the targeting of its employees and institutions, describing these attacks as “unacceptable.”
He said: “UNRWA supports Palestinian refugees with its authority, function, institutional structure and over 70 years of experience and cannot be replaced.”
He pointed out that UNRWA is not only a major humanitarian aid organization but also a “stabilizing force in the region.”

Yıldız added that “the attacks against UNRWA pose a serious threat to international peace and security,” indicating that the UN agency still exists to prevent a political solution to the Israeli occupation and the refugee issue.
He stressed the need for the UN Security Council to take immediate action to protect UNRWA, and called on all member states to increase their support for it.
He explained that Turkey has provided additional aid worth two million dollars to UNRWA during the current year.
He added: “UNRWA represents the honorable right of Palestinian refugees to return, and the ultimate goal is Palestinian refugees and their status as refugees.”
With full American support, Israel has been committing genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 139,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and thousands missing amid massive destruction and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues its massacres in Gaza, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop them immediately and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide.
