During the meeting, Saied stressed the “importance of this noble solidarity support from Italy, which gives a new impetus to the existing relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, and consolidates the values of synergy and solidarity between the two peoples.”

For a while, Tunisia has been suffering from a rapid spread of the virus and has received medical and food aid from many countries.

During his meeting with the Italian ambassador, Saied affirmed his “steadfast keenness to protect rights and freedoms and enhance the elements of security and stability,” according to the statement.

A week ago, Saied decided to dismiss the Prime Minister, Hisham Al-Mashishi, and to assume the executive power with the help of a government whose prime minister is appointed.

Freezing the powers of Parliament for 30 days, lifting the immunity of deputies, and presiding over the Public Prosecution.

Saied says that his exceptional measures are based on Article 80 of the constitution, and aim to “save the Tunisian state” in light of popular protests against the political, economic, and health crises (Corona).

However, the majority of parties rejected these measures, and some considered them a “coup against the constitution”, while others supported them and saw them as a “correction of course.”

During his meeting with the Italian ambassador, the Tunisian presidency also reported that Saied referred to “Tunisia’s position calling for a comprehensive and solidarity approach to the issue of irregular migration, and to addressing human trafficking and smuggling networks.”

Saied warned against “all attempts to politically employ this file in this delicate circumstance that Tunisia is going through,” according to the statement, without clarifying what is meant by “political employment.”
