FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Saturday that Qatar will organize the best version of the World Cup in history.
This came during a press conference held in the Qatari capital, Doha, prior to the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Sunday.
Infantino said, “Qatar has developed a lot in the field of protecting workers’ rights and has become a model of tolerance and teamwork.”
He added, “Qatar provides job opportunities for everyone who comes to it with the hope of life (…) and what the workers earn helps them support their families in their countries.”
And he added, “Slogans and moral lessons reflect hypocrisy, and conditions for workers in the State of Qatar are better than conditions for immigrants in Europe,” referring to some Western criticism of Qatar regarding the conditions of foreign workers.
He pointed out that “many international institutions have recognized that the standards of workers’ rights in the State of Qatar are similar to the standards of workers’ rights in Europe.”
And he added, “The Europeans should apologize to the people before giving lessons (..) Many European institutions operate in Qatar and reap financial profits.”
He added, “Everyone is present in the State of Qatar for the success of the World Cup,” stressing that this version “will be the best in history (…) proud of everyone who worked hard to make this global football event a success.”
Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup from November 20 to December 18.
The tournament begins with the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador at Al-Bayt Stadium, in the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East and the Arab world.
