The ministry said, “The independence struggle was launched under the leadership of the great leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on May 19, 1919 against the imperialist forces that have ambitions towards our homeland.”

She added, “This struggle not only culminated in the victory of independence and freedom that led to the establishment of our republic, but at the same time it put an end to the oppression of the occupying forces that committed brutal crimes in Anatolia and the gangs under their control.

He was an inspiration to persecuted peoples who yearn for independence. “

Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus celebrate on May 19 each year the Sports and Youth Festival and the commemoration of Ataturk.

It is the day when the war of independence began, starting with the state of Samsun, led by the founder of the republic, Ataturk, against the Allied forces in 1919.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry affirmed that Greece, as a tool in the hands of the imperialist powers at that period, tried to occupy Anatolia, and the unjust practices they committed on these lands should not be forgotten.

“We categorically reject the baseless and delirious statements issued by the parliament and authorities of Greece on the occasion of the anniversary of May 19, 1919, with the aim of distorting history completely.”

It condemned Greece’s efforts to deceive other countries by publishing “distorted allegations that have no historical basis issued by anti-Turkish pressure groups.”

She pointed out that Greece’s claim that it is the victim is unconvincing given its historical record of crimes against humanity.

And which it committed through its occupation of Izmir on May 15, 1919 with the support of the imperialist powers, and by committing massacres in Anatolia.

It explained that the Allied forces had to set up an investigation committee to look into crimes against humanity.

Against the background of the horrific level of the atrocities committed by Greece in the first months of the occupation.

It indicated that “the report of the investigation committee also documented that the occupation, which was a scene of injustice, turned into an invasion that is shameful.”

The ministry called on the Greek leadership to confront its history and remember the injustice practiced by its country, which was documented by the report of the investigation committee.

And she asked her to accept the historical facts, given that the actions of the Greek forces were inconsistent with the law of war under Article 59 of the Treaty of Lausanne.

It confirmed that after the War of Independence, Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos at the time nominated the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (in 1934).

In order to win the Nobel Peace Prize, “there are important lessons that the Greek leadership must learn from this matter.”

It stated that giving up an irresponsible political understanding of reading history backwards would be primarily in the interest of Greece.

The statement concluded: “We call on Greece to make joint efforts for peace, stability and a prosperous future on cooperation instead of trying to distort the facts.”
