Low unemployment rate in Turkey

The Turkish Statistics Center reported that the unemployment rate in Turkey in the 12 months to January was 12.2 percent.

It is 0.5 percent lower than the same period last month. This is also the lowest unemployment rate in Turkey in eight months.

During this period, the number of unemployed decreased by 11 thousand people, and reached 3 million and 861 thousand people.

On the other hand, the number of workers in Turkey increased by the end of the previous month by 822 thousand people compared to the previous month, and reached 27 million and 706 thousand people.

During this period, the labor market participation rate was 50.8%, which is 0.2% higher than the figure recorded in the same period last month.

The employment rate for men is 54.5%.

For women, the rate was 28.3 percent, down 0.1 percent from the previous month.

According to the Turkish Statistics Center, the unemployment rate among people between the ages of 15 and 24 decreased by 0.7 percent year on year to 24.4 percent.

In conjunction with the start of the Coronavirus crisis in Turkey, the Turkish government is providing financial aid to nearly two million people who have lost their jobs since April.

Last year, the unemployment rate in Turkey fluctuated between 9.6% and 13.5%.

Under Turkey’s new economic plan that was announced in September of last year, the unemployment rate is supposed to reach 11.8% by the end of this year.

The country aims to reach a single-digit unemployment rate in 2021.

The average unemployment rate in Turkey between 2005 and 2020 was 10.5 percent.

The highest unemployment rate in the period 2014-2020 was in January and February 2009 at 14.8 percent and the lowest rate in June 2012 at 7 per cent.
