Turkey extends its naval forces in the Gulf of Aden

The Turkish presidency sent a memorandum to Parliament to extend the mission of the Turkish Navy forces in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the territorial waters of Somalia for an additional year, starting from February 10, 2024.

The memorandum received by the Presidency of Parliament on Monday pointed out that the Turkish naval forces operating in the aforementioned areas were responsible for ensuring the safety of commercial ships that carry the Turkish flag or are associated with Turkey.

It also indicated the participation of these forces in joint international community operations against acts of piracy, armed robbery and terrorism at sea.

The memorandum pointed out that the mission of the naval forces operating in those areas was last extended by Parliament in early February 2023 for a year.

The memorandum requested that the forces’ mission be extended for another year, so that they continue to carry out the tasks assigned to them in line with the relevant Security Council resolutions.

Also to contribute to the international community’s operations against terrorism in the seas outside the territorial waters of the countries of the region.
