The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) announced that the earth’s crust moved by 7.3 meters due to the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.

This was stated by Orhan Tatar, director of earthquake risk reduction in AFAD, at a press conference held on Wednesday in the capital, Ankara.

He added, “The earth’s crust shook violently for two minutes during the two earthquakes. The depth of these two earthquakes ranged between 8.5 and 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth.”

And he said, “According to the information received, the earth’s crust moved by 7.3 meters due to the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.”

He stressed that the double earthquake hit a large area of Turkey that is larger than the area of many countries in the world.

And he added, “We are facing an unusual situation, and the total number of aftershocks so far has reached 3,858.”

He pointed out that the number of aftershocks, whose strength ranged between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale, reached 1253, while the number of aftershocks between 4 and 5 on the Richter scale reached 394.

He pointed out that the number of aftershocks, whose strength ranged between 5 and 6 degrees, reached 38, indicating that these tremors are “very large.”

On February 6, two successive earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in southern Turkey and northern Syria, causing great loss of life and property.
