Turkey plans to increase the capacity of the electrolyser, a key component of green hydrogen production, to 5 GW by 2035 with the aim of achieving a more flexible electrical system.

Green hydrogen is a type of fuel resulting from a chemical process in which an electric current from renewable sources is used to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water, thus producing energy without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which causes global warming.

According to information from the Turkish National Energy Plan prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ankara aims to operate a total of 96.6 gigawatts of electric power in the country in the period between 2020-2035 via green hydrogen.

According to the plan, Turkey is working to take advantage of the resources and technologies that allow flexibility in the electrical system network, in addition to the intermittent energy resources obtained from wind, water and solar energy.

In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Turkey mixes used natural gas with other clean fuels such as hydrogen and synthetic methane.

According to the plan, the proportion of green hydrogen in the mixed gas will be raised to 3.5 percent by 2035. It is expected that hydrogen energy will be used in the first phase to meet the needs of the industrial sector.

To this end, Turkey plans to increase the capacity of the electrolyzer to 5 GW and the battery capacity to 7.5 GW, which is an important component of green hydrogen production, by 2035 in order to reach a more flexible electricity system.

Ibrahim Danger, President of the Hydrogen Technologies Association, said that the global hydrogen market and trade is developing very quickly.

He stressed that Turkey should occupy a prominent position in this market.
