Historical sources indicate that the population of the city, which lived its greatest periods in the Hellenistic and Roman eras and was the capital of the Roman state during the reign of Emperor Augustus, reached 200 thousand people in that era.

The “Library of Celsus” in Ephesus, which dates back to the second century AD, is one of the most prominent buildings that attracts the attention of local and foreign visitors, along with buildings such as Hadrian’s Gate, Domitian’s Temple, Hagnesia Gate, Trajan’s Fountain, the 25,000-seat Grand Theater, the stadium and the old port.

Ephesus hosted 1,810,791 visitors during 2019, but this number decreased to 362,917 visitors in 2020 and 782,27 visitors in 2021 due to the restrictions that accompanied the Corona pandemic.
