The 44th edition of the Istanbul Marathon, the only one in the world to be organized between two continents, kicked off on Sunday.

The marathon started from the Asian side of the city at the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu gave the start.
The marathon, organized by the Istanbul Municipality, ends in the European side of the city, with a length of 42 km and 195 meters.
The marathon includes 3 categories: 42 km, a 15 km half marathon, and an 8 km popular running race.
About 60,000 runners from several countries will participate in the marathon, including 56 from the world’s elite class.

The marathon was organized for the first time in 1979 under the name “Eurasia Transcontinental Marathon” and was at that time for men, then the women’s category was added to it in 1991.
