On Saturday, the European Union expressed its deep concern over the escalation in Yemen, calling on the parties to the conflict to participate in the UN-led political process to end the conflict.

This came according to a brief statement by the European Union Mission in Yemen, via Twitter, in conjunction with the increasing wave of mutual military escalation between the government and coalition forces on the one hand, and the Houthis on the other.
“The European Union expresses its grave concern about the ongoing escalation in Yemen, which is leading to loss of civilian life and destruction of civilian infrastructure,” the statement said.
The European Union called on “all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians, and participate in the political process led by the United Nations to end the conflict,” according to the same statement.
Recently, Yemen witnessed a wave of mutual military escalation on several fronts across the country between government forces and the Arab coalition on one side and the Houthis on the other.

The coalition also intensified its air strikes against Houthi-controlled sites in several Yemeni governorates, including the capital, Sanaa.
For nearly 7 years, Yemen has been witnessing a continuous war between forces loyal to the government backed by an Arab military coalition led by the neighboring Saudi Arabia.
Also, the Iranian-backed Houthis, who have controlled several governorates, including the capital, Sanaa, since September 2014.
The war claimed more than 233,000 lives, and cost the economy more than $126 billion.

And 80 percent of Yemen’s population of about 30 million people depend on aid in the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the United Nations.
