Palestine welcomes a UN resolution affirming its sovereignty

Palestine on Saturday welcomed the United Nations’ vote in favor of a resolution affirming its right to sovereignty over its natural resources.

On Friday, the United Nations Committee on Economic and Financial Questions adopted the draft resolution entitled “Permanent Sovereignty of the Palestinian People in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources.”

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said in a statement that “the (Israeli) occupation has no sovereignty over the land of the State of Palestine or any of its cities.”

He added: “Voting in favor of this resolution confirms the Palestinian people’s right and sovereignty over their natural resources, including land, water, and energy resources.”

Al-Maliki called on Israel to “stop exploiting the natural resources in the occupied Palestinian territory.”

He also called on the international community to “work to compel the occupation to implement international resolutions and to ensure the freedom of the Palestinian people to benefit from their natural resources.”

The right to claim compensation for the exploitation, damage, loss, depletion, or endangerment of its natural resources in any way.

According to the statement, the resolution is “within a package of resolutions adopted by the United Nations in the interest of the Palestinian people on an annual basis.”

It is noteworthy that 156 countries voted in favor of the UN resolution, while 7 others opposed it: the United States, Israel, Canada, Nauru, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau, and 15 countries abstained, according to the statement.
