The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency, announced that natural disasters alone caused the displacement of 45 million people within their own countries in 2024, in addition to losses exceeding $240 billion.

This came in a report issued by the organization on the sidelines of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), held in Belém, the capital of the state of Pará in northern Brazil.

In its report, the organization called for highlighting the suffering of millions who live daily with the realities of floods, droughts, and other disasters.

It added: “Natural disasters alone in 2024 caused the displacement of 45 million people within their own countries, and losses exceeding $240 billion. These figures left farmers whose homes were destroyed by floods and children whose schools no longer exist.”

The organization emphasized that it supports governments and local partners to help communities affected by disasters recover, rebuild, and prepare for future storms. She stated that in 2024 alone, the organization helped more than 875,000 people survive disasters.
