The United Nations on Tuesday urged Azerbaijan and Armenia to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and resolve differences between the two neighbors by peaceful means.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced that Azerbaijani border military sites were subjected to Armenian artillery shelling.

“We are very concerned about reports of violence, and we need to verify their authenticity,” said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
“At this stage, we urge the two parties (Azerbaijan and Armenia) to exercise restraint and to address any issues between them through peaceful means and dialogue,” Haq added, during a press conference.
He continued, “We want to avoid any return to the escalation that we witnessed between the two countries before.”
On September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani army launched an operation to liberate its lands occupied by Armenia in the Karabakh region, after an attack by the Armenian army on populated civilian areas.

After fierce battles that lasted 44 days, Russia announced on November 10, 2020, that Azerbaijan and Armenia had reached a ceasefire agreement.
It provides for Baku to regain control of the occupied provinces, which allowed it to regain the territory of “Karabakh”.
