UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that the images of starving people in Gaza are “heartbreaking and unbearable.” This came in a statement on Monday regarding the situation in Gaza, which is under attack and a systematic policy of starvation by Israel.

Türk said, “The images of starving people in Gaza are heartbreaking and unbearable,” noting that reaching this situation is “an insult to all of humanity.”

Türk emphasized that the situation in Gaza requires a permanent end to the violence, saying, “Saving lives must be everyone’s priority.” According to Türk, Israel continues to impose severe restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza.

He said, “The aid allowed in is far less than what is needed. Israel must immediately allow the rapid and unhindered delivery of sufficient humanitarian assistance to civilians in need.”

He explained that allowing more aid would prevent suffering and loss of life, saying, “Denying civilians access to food is a war crime, and possibly a crime against humanity.”

Türk reiterated his demand for the immediate release of the Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip, and the UN High Commissioner called on third parties to refrain from contributing to violations of international law committed by any party to the conflict. He said, “These countries must exert all pressure to prevent and end these violations.”

Since the start of its genocide on October 7, 2023, Israel has been simultaneously committing a crime of starvation against the Palestinians of Gaza. It intensified its measures on March 2 by closing all crossings to humanitarian, relief, and medical aid, causing famine to spread and reaching “catastrophic” levels.

The US-backed genocide has left more than 210,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands displaced and a famine that has claimed the lives of many.
