The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, announced that more than two million Syrian refugees and displaced persons have returned to their homes since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.

Grandi said in a post on the X platform that he is currently in Lebanon and on his way to Syria to attend World Refugee Day.

He added: “More than two million Syrian refugees and displaced persons have returned to their homes since last December,” adding that this is a “sign of hope” amid rising regional tensions.

The UN official added: “This proves that we need political solutions rather than another wave of instability and displacement.”

On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions completed their control of the country, ending 61 years of bloody Baath Party rule, including 53 years of control by the Assad family.
