Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said on Tuesday that the EU’s absolute support for Greece in the Aegean and Mediterranean disputes under the pretext of solidarity with member states “contradicts the gains of the European Union and international law.”

This came in response to statements issued by the Czech Foreign Ministry, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, against statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding Greece.

Bilgic stressed that these European statements have no value or meaning for Turkey, criticizing the silence of those who made statements against Turkey regarding Greece’s position against Ankara.

He stressed that this position increases Greece’s intransigence and encourages non-resolution and supports Athens’ pursuit of its extremist demands.

He continued, “It is baffling that those who made these statements ignore Greece’s violations, harassment and threats against our country, its provocative actions and rhetoric, and their indifference to its actions and practices against international law.”

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that Turkey will continue to firmly protect its legitimate rights and interests in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.

And he added: “If the rotating presidency of the Czech Republic or the European Union wants to encourage dialogue, Turkish-European relations must be spared from exploiting the narrow-minded Greek-Cypriot veto that undermines the solidarity of the European Union and its common interests.”
