Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Monday that his country would resume exporting electricity to Iraq as of yesterday.

Bayraktar said in a post on the X platform: “As of yesterday, we have resumed exporting electricity to Iraq, with which we will contribute to the prosperity and peace of our region through the Development Road Project.”

He added: “Through the investments we will make, we will make the Development Road Project an energy road as well.”

Iraq has been suffering from an electricity shortage crisis for decades as a result of successive wars and the unstable security situation in the country.

The population’s resentment towards the government increases during the summer as a result of frequent power outages, coinciding with the rise in temperatures, reaching 43 degrees Celsius in some areas and sometimes exceeding 48 degrees Celsius.

Iraq produces between 19 and 21 thousand megawatts of electrical energy, while the actual need exceeds 30 thousand, which leads to frequent power outages amid protest from the population.
