Russian Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko will begin an official visit to Ankara on Thursday as a guest of Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş.

The visit comes at a time when Turkish diplomatic efforts led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine continue, while parliamentary diplomacy opportunities are being used to contribute to intergovernmental negotiations.

Kurtulmuş and Matviyenko will chair talks between the two countries’ delegations after their bilateral meeting in parliament, and following a joint press conference, Matviyenko will be a guest of the Turkish parliament with her accompanying delegation.

During his visit to Russia on September 24, 2024, Kurtulmuş addressed the Federation Council (the upper house of the Russian parliament) plenary assembly at the opening session of the new legislative session.

In his speech, he stated that Turkey considers it appropriate to take the initiative on every platform for a peaceful solution to the war between Russia and Ukraine, explaining that President Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin have an important approach towards peace.

Since the first day of its outbreak, President Erdogan has been carrying out intensive diplomatic activity between Russia and Ukraine to end the war that has completed its third year.

Last week, Erdogan met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who visited Turkey officially, and Erdogan also received Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the presidential complex.

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been launching a military attack on its neighbor Ukraine, stipulating that Kiev must abandon its membership in Western military entities in order to end it, which Kiev considers “interference” in its affairs.
