Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated Çukurova International Airport between Mersin and Adana provinces in the south of the country on Saturday with a capacity of 9 million passengers annually.
In a speech he delivered at the opening ceremony, Erdogan said that the airport hall area is 110 thousand square meters and its main runway is 3500 meters long and 60 meters wide.
He explained that the large size of its runway allows wide-body passenger aircraft to land and take off from the airport in addition to an auxiliary runway 3500 meters long and 45 meters wide.
The Turkish President confirmed that the airport, which is administratively located within the borders of Mersin province, is equipped with facilities of the highest quality and technology with a capacity to accommodate 48 aircraft and 9 million passengers annually.

He said that the total closed area of the airport’s superstructure facilities is 214 thousand and 180 square meters.
The total investment volume of the airport, which was built in cooperation between the public and private sectors, according to the Turkish President, is 608 million and 500 thousand euros.
He pointed out the strategic location of Çukurova International Airport in terms of its distance from the cities of Adana and Mersin, indicating that the airport is 35 km away from Adana and 40 km away from Mersin.
He pointed out that the airport provides employment for about 3,000 people in addition to its contribution to trade, tourism, agricultural production and economic life in the Çukurova region (the low plain in the Arabic sense, a plain extending between the states of Mersin, Adana and Osmaniye in southern Turkey).
