Piles of waste have piled up in and around waste containers throughout Izmir, especially in the Karsiyaka and Buca districts.

The accumulated waste has overflowed onto sidewalks and roads. Residents say the waste is causing an increase in bad odors, flies, and insects in the area, and needs to be collected.

Duygu Özerginer, a resident of Karsiyaka, said the area has suffered from a garbage problem for a long time: “We’ve become so accustomed to it that I try not to look at it.

I live in an apartment building directly across from the landfill, and it’s horrific to see such a sight when leaving the house. Another drawback is that this area is designated as a playground for children, and they play here all summer long.

Officials come to collect the garbage in the evening, but they don’t even touch the garbage that has accumulated and overflowed. We are very upset by this situation.”

Oğuz Kayapinar, a resident of Buca, said, “There has been a waste problem for about three months. The waste is not being collected, and even if it is, not all of it is collected. When animals tear it apart, it creates a foul odor, sewage, and a bad appearance. We are very concerned about this situation.”

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality officials explained that after the facility in Çiğli was closed, the waste was transferred to the Sur district. Waste collection continued for two or three days, and they were trying to regulate the resulting backlog.
