The Turkish Foreign Ministry said that the “regular Israeli attacks” on the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) are evidence that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pursuing an occupation policy towards Lebanon.

This came in a statement commenting on the renewed Israeli targeting of UNIFIL forces in Lebanon.

The statement indicated that UNIFIL forces are mandated by the UN Security Council to contribute to the security of the region.

It stressed the responsibility of the permanent member states of the Security Council to obstruct Israeli attacks on the UN mission forces.

It stressed that the role of UNIFIL becomes increasingly important when taking into account Israel’s move to spread war in the region.

It continued: The regular Israeli attacks on UNIFIL are evidence that the Netanyahu government is pursuing an occupation policy towards Lebanon and that it is prepared to use weapons under any circumstances.

The statement concluded by calling on all countries to take a common position against Israel and the countries that arm it.

On October 10, UNIFIL announced that two peacekeeping soldiers in Lebanon were injured when the Israeli army targeted a UN observation tower in Lebanon.

A day later, the Israeli army targeted the main entrance to the UNIFIL command center in the town of Naqoura in southern Lebanon with artillery shells.

A UNIFIL observation tower was hit by an Israeli Merkava tank shell, which resulted in the injury of two other UN soldiers.

UNIFIL was established in March 1978 to confirm Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, restore international peace and security, and assist the Lebanese government in regaining its authority in the region.

The mission was modified twice as a result of developments in 1982 and 2000, and after the July 2006 war, the UN Security Council decided to assign UNIFIL other tasks, such as monitoring the cessation of Israeli attacks, accompanying and supporting the Lebanese forces in the deployment process in southern Lebanon, and extending assistance to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to citizens and the safe voluntary return of the displaced.

Since September 23, Israel has expanded the scope of the genocide it has been committing in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to include most of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, through unprecedentedly violent and intense air strikes. It has also begun a ground incursion into the south, disregarding international warnings and UN resolutions.
