The floating islands in Aksakal village in the Solhan district of Bingöl province in eastern Turkey attract thousands of visitors every year who want to see this unique natural phenomenon up close.

The islands visited by Turkish and foreign tourists acquire a different beauty in each season.

According to data from the Directorate of Nature Protection and National Parks in the province, the floating islands hosted about 22,000 visitors in 2024.

Yusuf Ataç said, I have seen the moving islands covered in green in the pictures before. But it is much more beautiful with a white cover in winter.”

“It is also interesting that the depth of the lake on which the islands float is 60 to 80 meters,” Ataç added.

“I saw islands moving on the water for the first time in my life,” said Mehmet Ali Çelik.

“It is strange that these islands do not erode because there is water underneath them. The soil may erode over time, but these islands have been the same for years,” Çelik added.

It is worth noting that the islands change their locations depending on the direction of the wind.
