Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressed that a just peace in the Middle East will only be achieved by the Palestinian people obtaining a fully independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This came in an article by Erdoğan in English in the American magazine Newsweek, titled “Turkey’s Diplomatic Vision for Justice and Prosperity,” which was shared by Burhaneddin Duran, Director of the Turkish Presidency’s Communications Department, via the Turkish platform “InSocial.”

In his article, Erdoğan called on countries around the world to recognize the State of Palestine, considering that recognition “is the strongest response to the occupation, siege, and oppression practiced by Israel in Gaza.”

He began his article by highlighting the challenges the world has been facing for some time, most notably conflicts, terrorism, epidemics, climate disasters, and the imbalance of justice and equality, and the burden this places on the existing international order.

In this regard, he said, “Without deviating from its foreign policy based on the principles of justice, peace, and solidarity, Turkey operates with a vision that takes into account its own security and the shared future of humanity, in the midst of comprehensive and complex crises.”

He added, “Our call, which stems from our awareness that the world is bigger than five, and which we have been repeating for years, goes beyond merely criticizing the existing order to open up prospects for a shared future for humanity.”

He added, “Turkey continues its uninterrupted efforts to achieve a ceasefire, ensure uninterrupted access to humanitarian aid, and revive the two-state solution.”

He pointed out that the aid Turkey sent to Gaza, which exceeded 100,000 tons, is just one of several steps his country has taken to heal the wounds of Palestinians struggling with hunger under the inhumane blockade imposed by Israel.

He continued, “We believe that the international community is called upon to take a more firm and honest stance toward this brutality, as dozens of innocent Palestinians lose their lives every day, either from starvation, lack of medicine, or from bullets and bombs fired by the Israeli occupation forces.”

Erdoğan reiterated that a just peace can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He added, “This is an indispensable condition for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.” He continued, “Our call to the countries of the world is clear: recognize the State of Palestine.

Recognizing Palestine is the strongest response to occupation, blockade, and injustice.” He continued, “We congratulate the countries that have recently announced their intention to take this step, and we expect them to be consistent in their decisions and translate their commitments into concrete steps.”
