
Argentina and Brazil declared seven days of national mourning on Monday following the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88.
In a post on X, Argentine presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said that in accordance with the national mourning declared by President Javier Milei, flags on all government buildings will be flown at half-staff.
He added that “Pope Francis was the spiritual leader and guide of millions of women and men,” indicating that Argentina expresses its deep sorrow over his passing and offers its condolences to his family.
It is worth noting that Pope Francis is of Argentine descent and was born in Buenos Aires.
For his part, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva affirmed in a post on X that Pope Francis “will always be remembered as a symbol of love, tolerance, and solidarity.”
Lula da Silva offered his condolences to “all those around the world who are grieving this great loss,” adding, “Out of respect for the memory of Pope Francis and his life, I declare seven days of national mourning in Brazil.” On Monday, the Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis after his health deteriorated since February 18.
