The Health Care Museum at the Sultan Bayezid II Complex in the northwestern Turkish city of Edirne will receive 165,000 visitors in 2024.

The historical museum played an important role in treating people with mental illnesses during the Ottoman era, relying on the sound of water, music and perfumes.

On Wednesday, the museum’s director, Anwar Şengül, said that the Health Museum is one of the most important museums in Turkey.

Şengül added that the museum won the Council of Europe Museum Award in 2004.

He stated that the museum is the most visited place for local and foreign visitors in Edirne, especially foreigners from Bulgaria, Greece, Germany and France.

Şengül explained that the number of visitors to the museum last year reached 165,000, about 11,000 of whom were foreigners.

The Sultan Bayezid II Complex was built in 1488 and was used during the Ottoman era as a mental and psychological health center and served as a hospital and a medical college.

The complex underwent extensive restoration in 1986, the year the museum was founded.
