After the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that 5G will be implemented in 2026, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has accelerated the studies for the tender planned for next year.

According to the compilation made by BTK from the “Strategic Plan 2024-2028”, broadband internet is presented as the fastest developing electronic communication service in Turkey.

The rapid development and increasing use in the information technology sector increases the need for fiber on the fixed side, more spectrum on the mobile side and new generation communication networks (5G and beyond).

5G technology, which has been used in some countries of the world, has been implemented at Istanbul Airport in Turkey. The priorities include introducing 5G technology to the entire country, monitoring and encouraging the sector to contribute to the standard studies on 5G and beyond technology conducted within the framework of international standard organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union and the 3G Partnership Project, supporting R&D, planning and development studies on 6G technology and trying to express an opinion in the sector with local and national products.

In the plan, which highlights the objectives of conducting studies on 5G and 6G technology, which are about 10 times faster than 4G technology, and setting standards, Turkey’s vision for 5G, encouraging local manufacturing to produce equipment and tools within the scope of 5G mobile communications technology by local designers, engineers and workers, increasing technological independence and contributing to the local economy are among the goals.

In the 12th Development Plan, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, big data, blockchain, 5G, 6G, 3D printing, robotics, drone technologies, electric vehicles, green hydrogen technologies, renewable energy, genome editing, biotechnology and nanotechnology stand out as leading technologies that support the green and digital transformation in global technology trends.

In addition, space technology, quantum reality, augmented and virtual reality, cybersecurity, advanced materials, semiconductors, new generation nuclear reactors, energy storage, new generation off-rail system technologies, and carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies remain important.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the 5G technology is scheduled to be used in 2026, and the tender studies for this technology, which are scheduled to be held by Turkish Telecom next year, have started.

The preparations for the necessary studies for the use of the new generation 5G communication technology in the country have been accelerated in order to establish arrangements for the definition of local and national communication products, increase the quality of R&D projects, and contribute more to the local ecosystem. Some improvement project standards will be presented in this context.

In this context, studies are being conducted to ensure that all stages from the design to the production of 5G and beyond network equipment are carried out with national contribution. For this purpose, BTK is working with representatives of the public and private sectors.

The new generation communication technologies for 5G and beyond will be developed locally and nationally. It aims to develop the new generation communication technologies for 5G and beyond locally and nationally and start using them in Turkey and to establish a regulatory framework and mechanisms that will encourage the development of R&D, manufacturing and development activities in this field.

As the need for electronic communication infrastructures increases, policies for the deployment of new generation network infrastructures have emerged.

The increasing deployment and use of 5G will pave the way for new generation applications that require high communication quality and increased data load and this situation will increase the importance of integrating fixed, mobile and portable network infrastructures.

Based on the experience gained in previous licenses, 5G licensing studies will be completed by considering the installation of local communication infrastructure in line with user needs and sectoral developments within the framework of international developments.

On the other hand, while BTK is pursuing national and international studies for 6G, activities will be carried out to provide broadband services provided via satellite, especially low-orbit satellites, throughout the country within the framework of the regulations to be drawn up and localization studies will be initiated.
