
Turkey and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to establish a joint business council, aiming to re-establish institutional cooperation between the two countries.
The Turkish Ministry of Trade said in a statement published on Twitter that a roundtable meeting was held in the presence of Turkish Deputy Trade Minister Volkan Acar and Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal al-Shaar.
The ministry added that the meeting was also attended by businessmen who are members of the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board. The ministry explained that the meeting discussed possible cooperation opportunities between the two countries within the framework of the reconstruction process in Syria.
It noted that a special focus was placed on the “build, operate, transfer” models and public-private partnerships.
The ministry noted that a memorandum of understanding was signed to establish a joint business council with the aim of re-establishing institutional cooperation between the two countries.
Nine separate memoranda of understanding were also signed between civil society organizations in Turkey and Syria, “establishing a strong and sustainable basis for cooperation between the two countries,” according to the statement.
The Turkish Ministry affirmed that it will continue its efforts to deepen economic and trade relations between the two countries within an institutional framework, while working to strengthen direct communication channels between the private sectors in both countries.
