Fidan and Lavrov discuss peace between Moscow and Kyiv

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, the latest efforts to achieve peace between Moscow and Kyiv.

This came during a phone call between the two on Monday, according to diplomatic sources at the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

During a press conference on Saturday, President Putin proposed resuming direct talks with Ukraine without preconditions next Thursday in Istanbul, after they were suspended in 2022.

The Russian presidency (the Kremlin) said in a statement on Sunday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offered his full support for his Russian counterpart, Putin, to hold direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul.

The Turkish Presidential Communications Department said in a statement on Sunday that President Erdoğan expressed to his Russian counterpart Turkey’s readiness to host peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been waging a military offensive against its neighbor, Ukraine, and is demanding that Kyiv abandon its membership in Western military entities as a condition for ending the offensive. Kyiv considers this to be “interference” in its internal affairs.
