Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz stated that the work that will be carried out to develop the Middle Corridor, which is the transportation project extending from Turkey to Central Asia, will enhance cooperation between Turkic countries and reveal the global role of the Turkic world.

This came in a speech during the informal summit of heads of state of the Organization of Turkic States held in the Azerbaijani city of Shusha.

Yilmaz expressed his belief that signing the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia as soon as possible will remove the biggest obstacle to a comprehensive regional solution in the South Caucasus.

He added: “Establishing lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus is of great importance not only for the countries of the region, but also for global security and interconnection, as regional transport lines will be opened.”

He continued: “The opening of the aforementioned transportation lines will increase regional cooperation, creating great advantages and bringing new opportunities to the entire Turkish world, including Central Asia and the Black Sea and Caspian Sea basins.”

He stated: “Transporting Turkmen natural gas to Turkey and Europe will contribute to our national well-being and energy security in Europe.”

The “Middle Corridor” is an alternative to the Northern Corridor linking China and Europe, and it crosses from Turkey to the Caucasus region, and from there it crosses the Caspian Sea to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, all the way to China.

The Middle Corridor is considered one of three global trade corridors starting from China to Europe, the first of which is the northern corridor through Russia and the southern corridor through Iran, in addition to the sea corridor through the Suez Canal.

The length of the middle corridor is 4,256 km, between land and railways, in addition to 508 km by sea.

The middle corridor is known as: “TRANS-CASPIAN INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT ROUTE” or abbreviated “TITR”.
