Istanbul Airport won the “Best Airport in Europe” award presented by Airports Council International in Europe in the category of airports serving more than 40 million passengers.
According to a statement published by the company operating Istanbul Airport (IGA), Director General of the International Airports Council in Europe, Olivier Jankovic, presented the award to the company’s CEO, Selahattin Bilgen.
The award was presented during the 34th Annual General Conference of the European Airports Council, held in Istanbul.
Istanbul Airport won the award equally with Rome Fiumicino Airport, which won the title last year.
Bilgen expressed his satisfaction that Istanbul Airport was considered “deserving of the award again,” considering that it “will be an inspiration to continue striving toward excellence.”

He said: “We are always looking for new ways to exceed the expectations of our guests at the airport in the areas of sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technological advancement.”
Senior executives, senior industry managers and more than 500 airport professionals from around the world attended the “European Airports Council Annual General Conference” hosted by Istanbul Airport from 1 to 4 July.
Istanbul Airport was built on an area of 76.5 million square meters and about 10,000 workers worked on its construction. It is scheduled that the construction of the other phases of the airport will be completed by 2025.
The new airport consists of 6 runways, has a capacity of 500 aircraft, and is equipped with an open and closed garage that can accommodate about 70,000 cars.
After the completion of all phases of the airport, the capacity is scheduled to reach 200 million passengers annually.
