European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi announced Thursday that the European Union and Turkey set a record high in terms of trade last year, exceeding 200 billion euros.
This came in a press conference held by Várhelyi with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in the capital, Ankara.
Várhelyi said: “We aim to activate direct investment worth $2.4 billion (within the framework of the European-Turkish Investment Fund).”
He added: “We broke a record last year in terms of the volume of trade between the European Union and Turkey by exceeding 200 billion euros.”

He pointed out that Ankara is the fifth largest trading partner of the European Union, and that the latter remains the most important source of foreign direct investment in Turkey.
Várhelyi stressed the necessity and importance of strengthening existing bilateral relations between Turkey and the European Union and pushing them to greater momentum.
He also stressed the need for European businessmen and investors to intensify their investments in many fields and sectors in Turkey.
He pointed out that the European-Turkish Investment Fund will contribute directly to Turkey’s economy.
