On Wednesday, the European Council and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the migration and asylum pact for the bloc’s countries.
A statement issued by the Council of the European Union stated that Spain, which chairs the Council, achieved results in its negotiations with the European Parliament regarding reform of the immigration and asylum system.
The Council added that a political agreement had been reached on the five files of the new Charter on Migration and Asylum, which would strengthen the system more efficiently.
The agreement comes after a charter presented by the European Commission in September 2020 in a new attempt to reformulate European regulations after the failure of a previous attempt in 2016 following the refugee crisis.

In this context, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande Marlaska Gomez said in a statement that within the framework of the agreement, all stages of the management of refugees and migrants will be addressed.
It is noteworthy that the European Union continues to search for a solution to how to distribute asylum seekers among member states and return those whose applications have been rejected since the 2015 migration crisis.
The Migration and Asylum Charter is based on five pillars, which include screening regulations for collecting information on people arriving at the external borders of the Union, regulations on asylum procedures and the administration of asylum and migration, crisis regulations, and finally updating data using biometric evidence collected during the screening process.
