Turkish Minister of Environment, Urban Development and Climate Murat Kurum announced Ankara’s candidacy to host the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in 2026.

This came in statements he made on Tuesday after his participation in a ministerial session on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Conference “COP 27” in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
The Turkish minister added that after announcing Ankara’s candidacy to host the aforementioned conference, they will submit an official request to the United Nations Secretariat.
He explained that Turkey has previously hosted many conferences and meetings, both humanitarian and climate-related.

He considered that the candidacy to host the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference is a step through which Turkey seeks to share with the world its new campaigns regarding climate, according to him.
In a related context, the Turkish minister said that his country had updated the “national contribution statement”, according to which it raised its target rate for reducing carbon emissions from 21 to 41 percent by 2030.

He stressed that Turkey will continue resolutely its struggle against climate change in light of its zero-emission goals.
