Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin bilateral relations and regional issues.

This came in a telephone conversation between the two leaders on Saturday, according to a statement issued by the Turkish Presidency Communication Department.
The statement indicated that the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional issues, topped by grain shipment and developments regarding the Zaporozhye nuclear plant.
President Erdoğan said that Turkey could play a “facilitating” role on the Zaporozhye plant issue similar to its role in the grain agreement.

The two leaders also confirmed moving forward on Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear plant.
The two leaders agreed to discuss the aforementioned issues in detail, along with other issues on their agenda, during their meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on the sidelines of their participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit scheduled for mid-September.

Erdogan also offered his condolences to Putin on the death of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union.
