The Turkish Consulate in Erbil, northern Iraq, commemorated the 34th anniversary of the bombing of the city of Halabja in Sulaymaniyah Governorate (north) with chemical weapons.

On Wednesday, the consulate said in a statement via Twitter: “We recall the brutal killing of thousands of civilians by the Baath regime in the chemical attack on Halabja on March 16, 1988, as it is a black stain on history.”
It added: “Turkey, which opened its doors to its Kurdish brothers who took refuge in it to escape inhuman attacks, shares with them today this great pain.”
The consulate called for God’s mercy for those who lost their lives in the Halabja massacre.
The massacre took place at the end of the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) using chemical bombs, targeting Halabja and surrounding villages, killing 5,000 people and wounding 10,000 others.
