The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday expressed its “deep concern” over the prison sentence of ousted Myanmar’s chancellor, Aung San Suu Kyi.

On Monday, a Myanmar court sentenced Suu Kyi, 76, to four years in prison after finding her guilty of “inciting and violating Corona restrictions” before the military council reduced her sentence to two years.

In a unanimous statement (15 countries), the Security Council expressed “deep concern about the sentencing of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, (imposed) President Win Myint (same ruling), and others.”

The statement called on the country’s ruling military council to release all those arbitrarily detained since the military coup, in early February.

“The members of the Security Council reaffirm their continued support for Myanmar’s democratization process,” he added.

They stress the need to support democratic institutions and processes, refrain from violence, constructive dialogue and reconciliation in accordance with the will and interests of the people of Myanmar.
