A police officer in Babil Governorate said, “Unidentified persons detonated an explosive device on a convoy of trucks belonging to the International Coalition on the highway in Babil Governorate (central).”

The officer, who preferred not to be named as he was not authorized to speak to the media, stated that “the explosion caused minor material damage to one of the convoy’s vehicles, without causing any casualties.”

No party has claimed responsibility for the attack, and there was no immediate comment from the Iraqi authorities and the international coalition.

This is the third explosion within a day, as two columns were targeted by two similar attacks in the governorates of Dhi Qar (south) and Babil (central) on Thursday evening.

In recent weeks, the frequency of missile attacks, booby-trapped drones and explosive devices targeting the US embassy and the international coalition forces led by Washington has escalated throughout Iraq.

Washington accuses Iraqi armed factions linked to Iran of being behind the attacks targeting its embassy and bases where American soldiers are deployed in Iraq.

The new attacks come despite Baghdad and Washington on Monday reaching an agreement to withdraw US combat forces from Iraq by the end of this year.

Since 2014, Washington has led an international coalition to combat ISIS, which overran a third of Iraq at the time, with about 3,000 coalition soldiers deployed in Iraq, including 2,500 Americans.
