The Military Committee announces the opening of coastal road in Libya

On Friday, the Libyan Joint Military Committee “5 5” announced the opening of the strategic coastal road “Misrata – Sirte” linking the east and west of the country.

This came according to a statement by the Joint Military Committee on the eve of the expiry of a deadline granted by the Libyan army to communicate with the militia of retired General Khalifa Haftar regarding the opening of the strategic coastal road.

The statement stated that “the coastal road is under the control of the Security Arrangements Committee of the Joint Military Committee, and it will take all security measures professionally and completely impartially to ensure the safety and security of pedestrians.”

He explained that “it was decided to prevent the passage of military convoys on the coastal road from the Abu Qrain Gate (east of Misurata) to the Thirty Gate (west of Sirte).”

The statement called on all official bodies and authorities to “coordinate in advance with the Military Committee represented by its Security Arrangements Committee regarding the movement of official figures and delegations on the coastal road.”

The Military Committee also valued the efforts of the United Nations in opening the coastal road, as well as the efforts of the Security Arrangements Committee and the Committee to remove mines and remnants of war, according to the same statement.

And on Wednesday, the Libyan army gave the Military Committee “5 5” until Saturday to communicate with Haftar’s militia to open the strategic coastal road “Misrata – Sirte” linking the east and west of the country.

And mercenaries from the Russian “Wagner” company that have supported Haftar’s militia have been stationed in the city of Sirte and its airport since his aggression on Tripoli on April 4, 2019.

On June 20, the Libyan Presidential Council announced the assignment of the Joint Military Committee (55) to coordinate between the two parties to the conflict to ensure the implementation of the complete opening of the coastal road.

On March 16, the oil-rich country experienced a political breakthrough.

As a result, an elected transitional authority, comprising a unity government and a presidential council, assumed its duties to lead the country to parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24.
