The Palestinians adhere to East Jerusalem as the capital of their hoped-for state, based on international legitimacy decisions.

It does not recognize Israel’s occupation of the city in 1967, nor its annexation in 1981.

Al Mahmoud referred to the position of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in “supporting the brotherly Palestinian people and defending the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Arabism of Jerusalem.”

He also praised his country’s role in mediating to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza, welcoming this agreement.

On Friday dawn, a ceasefire came into effect between the Palestinian factions in Gaza and Israel, after an Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, which is inhabited by more than two million Palestinians, and has been besieged by Israel since 2006.

Al Mahmoud expressed his hope that this agreement would pave the way for a sustainable calm that would provide the appropriate environment for the resumption of the peace process.

In accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy, the Arab Peace Initiative and the two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Peace negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides have been stalled since April 2014.

This is due to Israel’s refusal to stop settlement activity in the occupied lands and to accept the borders before the June 1967 war as the basis for the two-state solution.

In total, the brutal aggression on all Palestinian lands resulted in 280 martyrs, including 69 children, 40 women and 17 elderly, in addition to more than 8,900 wounded, 90 of whom were “very serious” injuries.

While 13 Israelis were killed, and hundreds were wounded, during the Palestinian factions in Gaza responded to the aggression by firing rockets at Israel.
